What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's Disease is a disease that causes a special part of the motor system in the brain to lose cells. It is not known why the cells in this particular area of the brain die. Symptoms are first noticed when 80% of the cells have been lost. The disease occurs most often in people between the ages of 45 to 65, although much older and younger patients are not uncommon. The illness affects men and women of all races and ethnic backgrounds.
What causes Parkinson's Disease?
Scientists do not know what causes Parkinson's Disease. We know that it is not passed along in families, except in very rare cases and you cannot "catch it" from someone else. Research is currently being done on the possibility of an environmental cause.
What are the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's Disease?
The symptoms of Parkinson's Disease are tremor (hands that shake while in the lap or while walking), stiffness, slowness in movement and a problem with balance.
How is Parkinson's Disease treated?
We cannot cure or prevent Parkinson's Disease, but medications can help with symptoms, often dramatically so. Several medications are available and used in different combinations can improve symptoms. Treatment can help people with Parkinson's Disease stay active, at home and in the community. When medications become less effective as may happen after ten years or more, a surgical procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation may be an option.
What are some of the complications associated with Parkinson's Disease?
Some of the complications of Parkinson's Disease include falls, poor sleep patterns, depression, anxiety, constipation, soft voice, difficulty swallowing and weight loss. Many of these problems can be managed with assistance devices, medications or therapy.
